Job Description:
Position Overview: -Under the supervision of the school
principal, the middle school science teacher engages students in an
integrated phenomenon-based, scientific inquiry and research
instructional model using the FLACS middle school curriculum,
aligned with the New York State Next Generation Learning Standards.
The middle school science teacher actively engages students in
scientific inquiry in areas of life, physical, and the earth
sciences through experimentation, modeling, reading, and inquiry.
The science teacher facilitates the successful implementation of
rigorous standards-based curriculum to ensure students master the
common core standards and meet the academic goals, and is
responsive to diverse learning needs of all students including
general education, students with disabilities, and English Language
Learners. The science teacher works with the school administrators
to implement school procedures and policies and communicates with
students' parents, guardians, and/or caregivers. - -Key
Responsibilities:
Demonstrates knowledge of grade-level
science content curriculum to engage students using strategies of
scientific inquiry through experimentation, modeling, and reading
to develop mastery in areas of life, physical, and earth
sciences.Develops innovative instructional methodologies to teach
middle school students scientific concepts using Amplify Science
and FLACS network developed curriculum maps as a blueprint, to
enable the successful implementation of rigorous standards-based
curriculum.Plans, prepares and facilitates daily standards based
lessons that utilize a variety of instructional strategies which
differentiate teaching based on the diverse and individual needs of
all students including general education, students with
disabilities and ELLs.Establishes a culture of learning to engage
students in rigorous standards based science curriculum to ensure
students master the state standards and are prepared to enter high
school.
Focuses on integration of literacy
skills across science content, which includes explicit vocabulary
development, reading, writing, speaking and listening
standards.Integrates technology into the curriculum and
classroom.Designs and implements assessments that measure progress
towards academic standards.Uses assessment data to refine
curriculum and inform instructional practices to create a classroom
culture of data driven decision making to close the achievement gap
for all students including general education, students with
disabilities and ELLs.
Creates a classroom environment of
respect and rapport to ensure a safe, caring and orderly school
environment which nurtures the unique needs of each
student.Participates in collaborative curriculum and professional
development, professional learning communities, grade-level
activities and school wide functions. - -Seeks to actively know
students' strengths and challenge areas and communicates

Bachelor's degree is required;
master's degree is preferredPrior satisfactory teaching experience
preferredNew York State Certification in Biology (grades 7-12)
and/or Biology (grades 5-9)and/or Chemistry (grades 5-9) and/or
Chemistry (grades 7-12) and/or Generalist in Middle Childhood
Education (grades 5-9) and/or Physics (grades 5-9) and/or Physics
(grades 7-12) and/or Earth Science (grades 5-9) and/or Earth
Science (grades 7-12)Dual certification in English to Speakers of
Other Languages (ESOL) or Students with Disabilities is a plus
