East Side House Settlement (ESH) is a community resource in the South Bronx. We believe education is the key that enables all people to create an economic and civic opportunities for themselves, their families and the communities.

East Side House's Early Childhood programs provide Early Head Start and Head Start services in a safe, supportive, educational environment for children ages 18+ months to 5 years of age. Serving 231 children daily from five locations, the comprehensive program is designed to develop the cognitive, social, emotional and physical skills of children in a safe, supportive environment. Children and families receive a broad range of educational, nutritional, social and preventive health services. Our staff foster partnerships with families so that they can support school learning and achievement as well as advocate for their children and themselves. We expect that all staff will work collaboratively, and with the community, to promote school readiness while creating a safe, healthy and protective environment.

The primary function(s) and goals of the Assistant Director of Family Services is to support the departmental goals, outcomes and deliverables. The Assistant Director of Family Services will oversee the Family Services Workers, ensure the ERESA requirements are met, enrollment and attendance follows contractual mandates. The Assistant Director of Family Services will manage timelines and submission of attendance and enrollment. The Assistant Director will ensure monthly parent workshops are facilitated and represent parent need and interest. The Assistant Director of Family Services will ensure databases are updated regularly to reflect enrollment within the program, he/she will ensure class lists are updated and accurate. In addition, the Assistant Director of Family Services work collaboratively with the Director of Program Operations on enrollment related matters. The Assistant Director of Family Services will ensure quality record keeping, case note documentation, quality service provision to families and timely data entry, analysis and practice.

Essential Functions:

Duties include, but are not limited to the following key activities

  • Supervision of the Family Services staff and provide direction with administrative and practical aspects of their work (e.g. scheduling, process recording, intake process, interviewing, etc.) and special service activities;
  • Oversee and assist staff with appropriate referrals (e.g. individual, group, agency resources in the community)
  • Oversee and assist staff in planning and conducting meetings and other activities.
  • Oversee and assist staff in their role as resource persons to parent participation program.
  • Oversee and assist staff in reaching their potential in relation to all aspects of responsibilities.
    • Oversee Family Services component through weekly supervision and periodical evaluation of staff and support staff to ensure program enhancements, development, commonalities and uniqueness in all sites
    • Assist the agency's Deputy Director and Assistant Director, by representing the agency at outside professional meetings; in developing community relations and outreach strategies, e.g. Community Building Project, Community Planning Board, Community School District, and Collaborative efforts
    • Support community residents, parents and program participants in the active involvement in agency community building efforts as well as complete tasks necessary to move these efforts forward including serving on community build committees as assigned by supervisor.
    • Stay abreast of resources, programs, initiatives, best practices, etc. that will add value to Head Start/Day Care programs, and make recommendations to leadership
    • Establish knowledge base on Head Start/Day Care and ESH's procedures, and comprehension of Collective Bargaining Agreements, and apply all effectively through-out day to day operations
    • Perform additional program duties functions as needed

      Education and Experience:
      • Bachelors of Arts required; Masters in Social Work preferred
      • Two (2) years of Community Service or Social Services/Community Services Agency work

            Work Environment

            This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

            Physical Demands

            The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.

            Expected Hours of Work

            This is a full-time, exempt position. General work schedule for this position is from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Possible Workdays/hours subject to change based on ESH's needs. Possible work on weekends, holidays or after work hours for projects, special events, etc. to meet program operational goals.

            Remote Work

            ESH has determined that up to zero(%) of this position can be remote due to COVID-19. Subject to change as public health conditions evolve.


            Travel is primarily during the business day to affiliated programs, agency partners, over site agencies, etc.
