leading B2B multichannel media brand in biotech is seeking a
Managing Editor to join its dynamic team within the Genetic
Engineering and Biotechnology News franchise. The Managing Editor
is accountable for helping to create, develop, manage, and edit
content and content strategies for Genetic Engineering &
Biotechnology News (GEN) and its sister publication, Inside
Precision Medicine (IPM) . This individual will play a critical
quarterbacking role in helping the EIC manage the commission,
editing, scheduling and publication of a variety of print and
digital content (including sponsored content). In addition to a
monthly print magazine, GEN---s online properties include the
website (www.genengews.com); multiple e-newsletters; and a variety
of sponsored/custom products including supplements, microsites, and
e-books. IPM publishes six bimonthly print issues and multiple
e-newsletters, supplements and a variety of sponsored content.
Working closely with colleagues, the Managing Editor will play a
key role in helping to assemble each print issue; the flow of daily
online news stories; and the development and programming of digital
content that satisfies the growing appetite for ancillary media,
including video and information. The Managing Editor will help
implement production standards and policies and ensure that
published content is factual and grammatically correct. (S)he
manages content taxonomies to support product functionality,
information organization, and presentation of content on the site.
(S)he also helps coordinate the efforts of freelance and other
editors, manage quality control, and the article acquisition
process with regards to the web. Duties include: Develop
exceptional online experiences by writing and editing content that
appears on www.genengenws.com and associated e-newsletters Assist
with the development and execution of our online content strategy
Ownership and accountability for meeting goals set for website
traffic growth, time spent on site, site pageviews, e-newsletter
open, and click-through rates Creates online editorial style
guidelines and assumes responsibility for grammatical accuracy,
clarity, completeness, appropriateness for intended audience
Monitor site content to ensure it remains accurate, compliant and
reflective of our brand. Revise and decommission content as
required Organizes and oversees the digital editorial workflow,
quality control, and promotion processes for assigned products,
microsites, and other special projects Monitors online goals (i.e.
traffic levels, open rates, etc.), evaluates and monitors progress,
makes suggestions for metric improvement, and makes adjustments in
content and content offering, as needed Acts as liaison between
editorial, production, art, & IT and other support department
staffs Works with Publisher and Web Producer to create guidelines
for content tagging, tag accuracy, management and extension of
content taxonomies. Works with editorial staff to ensure proper use
of taxonomy Cognizant of audience engagement and advertiser needs
and works in partnership with all parties to meet both sets of
needs without compromising editorial integrity Helps manage online
article acquisition process by regularly corresponding with authors
and others interested in contributing articles, clarifying
publication policies, address issues of concern, and coordinate
schedules as required Develops, maintains, and utilizes knowledge
of industry and trends, competitive environment, and editorial
vision. Demonstrates thorough evolution of online editorial
products as necessary Attends industry conferences, trade shows,
and other events, representing the publication and the Company as
required. Establishes and maintains positive professional
relationships with authors, industry experts, and other internal
and external contacts Performs additional duties as assigned
Position Requirements: Degree in Journalism, Science,
Communications or other relevant field or commensurate experience 3
to 5 years of relevant journalism/writing experience, including
some experience in science, especially the life sciences, for
online properties 2 to 4 years experience directing/ managing
production of news-related web site Understands content management
paradigms for the web including: classification, workflow, CSS,
HTML, page promotion, templates and page components Demonstrated
organizational and project management skills, including the ability
to work in a deadline-oriented environment Competency in use of
editing and proofreading skills to resolve stylistic, grammatical,
and form of written material Experience in developing web content
and sites that incorporate audio, video and other multi-media
formats Excellent written and oral communications skills
Self-motivated and able to work independently and with minimal
direction Previous experience writing for the life science/biotech
market Knowledge of new media platforms such as social networking
