This is a grant funded position that goes until 6/30/2025.The Laboratory Technician will assist the Principle Investigator in a 3-year project to voucher and DNA barcode algae specimens belonging to the family Characeae. To train and guide interns and volunteers in various aspect of the project. To contribute to outreach activities related to the project. Our aspiration is to continue to cultivate a workforce and institution that is as diverse as the communities we serve and the audiences we engage.Specific Duties and Responsibilities:This 3-year position is part of a LCCMR/Minnesota Department of Natural Resources funded project to survey more than 500 lakes across Minnesota for freshwater green algae in the family Characeae. Specifically, the technician will receive regular shipments of living Characeae collections: Sort and prepare herbarium-quality voucher specimens, isolate and clean tissue for DNA extraction, use PCR and DNA sequencing techniques to generate DNA-barcodes for each collection, and analyze DNA-barcode data for identification. Managing a large database of collections data to efficiently incorporate this information into the NYBG herbarium along with the physical herbarium vouchers. Assist in daily operations in the Cullman Lab pertaining to the project, including ordering reagents and other supplies, maintaining an inventory and records for all such orders, and training of project participants (interns, students, and volunteers) in DNA sequencing techniques and herbarium specimen preparation/curation. Contribute to education and outreach activities for project stakeholders and the public.Requirements: Bachelor or Masters degree (preferred) in phycology (preferred), botany, molecular biology, natural history collections, or related field Experience with standard techniques in algae (preferred) or plant molecular biology (nucleic acid extraction, PCR, DNA sequencing, etc.) Experience with algae Natural History collections (herbarium specimens) including collections data management, specimen mounting, label preparation, curation, etc. Experience with phylogenetic analysis, or a willingness to be trained in these techniques Excellent organizational skills and an ability to effectively communicate with a broad range of lab users, administrative staff, and the publicPlease be advised, as a term and condition of accepting a job offer the candidate for employment must submit proof of full vaccination.
