Rotating Duties & Responsibilities Purpose of Position: The
Assistant Director of Nursing is an integral member of Nursing
Services Administration. Under the supervision of the Deputy
Director of Nursing or designee, he/she assumes administrative
responsibilities and clinical oversight for Patient Care Services.
His/Her responsibilities are carried out within the framework of
the Hospital by laws, the Mission/Vision statement, policies and
procedures, all regulatory (JCAHO, NYSDOH) and professional
organizational standards. Responsibilities of the Assistant
Director of Nursing: 1. Assumes 24 hour nursing responsibilities
for all elements of patient care and staffing. 2. Ensures that
patient care assignments are based on staff competence and patient
acuity. 3. Maintains staffing patterns that provide for quality
nursing care on a 24 hour basis. 4. Ensures accuracy and timely
electronic documentation to include but not limited to medication
administration, progress notes, care plans, and patient
assessments. 5. Participates in the selection and the development
of staff. Assist in the implementation of unit orientation for all
new staff. 6. Reviews profiles on personnel and provide feedback to
employees. 7. Counsels staff when indicated and make
recommendations for further corrective actions. 8. Monitors staff
attendance and ensure that progressive disciplinary action is
followed for excessive absenteeism and lateness, and for other
areas of misconduct. 9. Performs fact-finding for all potential
labor relations issues and provides follow up. 10. Communicates
effectively with the patient, family, medical, nursing and other
members of the interdisciplinary team. 11. Responds to
patient/family complaints, provides resolution and submits written
reports in a timely manner. 12. Completes performance appraisals in
a timely manner in collaboration with Staff Development. 13.
Develops, interprets and ensures compliance with clinical policies
and procedures. 14. Ensures that standards of practices are
maintained. 15. Ensures that all mandatory in-services, performance
appraisals, annual health assessments, annual competencies, and
licensures are current. 16. Attends Nursing and Hospital Committee
meetings as assigned. 17. Creates and maintains a working milieu
conducive to providing optimal care. 18. Serves as a resource
person for the Interdisciplinary Care Team. 19. Uses cost
containment strategies to ensure effective utilization of staff,
supplies and equipment 20. Plans, directs, coordinates, and
evaluates, progress of nursing activities on his/her unit. 21.
Monitors performance improvements activities. 22. Apply established
standards of nursing practice as promulgated by ANA, and JCAHO. 23.
Knowledge and understanding of Infection Control and Fire Safety.
24. Communicate, counsel, guide, teach, direct, set priorities, and
identify and solve problems 25. Collaborates with the Administrator
on Duty on issues involving patient care’ family and significant
others. 26. Ensures a safe and secure environment free of hazards
to reduce the risk of injury to all customers. 27. Ensures that
safety management issues are appropriately addressed. 28. Attends
departmental meetings (CQI Leadership) at least six (6) times
annually. 29. Conducts risk assessments to reduce adverse events.
30. Participates in the annual budgeting process. 31. Makes
recommendation for cost containment to ensure proper utilization of
resources. 32. Other duties as determined by the Chief Nurse
Executive or designee. Minimum Qualifications 1. Licensed and
currently registered to practice as a professional nurse in New
York State, plus (2) or (3), below. 2. Masters Degree in Nursing
Administration, Education, Clinical Specialty or equivalent field
and five years of satisfactory nursing experience, of which three
years shall have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity; or a
Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing and six years of satisfactory
nursing experience, four years of which shall have been in a
supervisory or teaching capacity. 3. A satisfactory equivalent of
education and experience. However, all candidates must be licensed
and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New
York State.
