MATH INSTRUCTIONAL LEADER (MIL) About Atmosphere Academy
Atmosphere Academy is a SUNY-approved charter school that serves
Bronx students and families in grades 6 through 8. Atmosphere's
mission is to provide an "atmosphere" for learning in which
students and teachers realize their potential as collaborative
leaders. To realize this goal, Atmosphere has developed a suite of
robust academic and enrichment programming that are designed to
develop students' skills, knowledge, and character. Similarly, the
school promotes a professional culture for its staff that focuses
on being a learning organization. Instructional Leader The
Mathematics Instructional Leader (MIL) is the primary supervisor of
math teachers at Atmosphere. The MIL supports Atmosphere Officers
in carrying out the academic program departmentally. The MIL will
directly supervise a cohort of 12-14 teachers by leading
instructional cycles, observations, coaching sessions, evaluations
and collecting and analyzing data among other key duties under the
direction and supervision of an Officer. Atmosphere school leaders
support teachers and staff in developing their instructional and
professional practice by promoting a focus on continuous
improvement that culminates in better student outcomes.
Facilitating coaching, teaming, and professional development
opportunities are key components of the school leaders'
responsibilities. Moreover, observation and evaluation are
approached as shared processes with an emphasis on collaboration,
self-reflection, and mutual accountability. Why Atmosphere

satisfaction. Qualifications Relevant teaching experience in a
charter school or other school setting Proven track record of
successfully working with Atmosphere's student population
Experience working with diverse student groupings that may include
a range of ELL students, special education students, general
education students, and gifted students Dynamic teacher persona
that engages students and seamlessly manages the classroom Strong
lesson planning, curriculum development, and assessment development
skills Student-centered teaching philosophy and pedagogy that is
compatible with both the SIOP and GRR instructional model Strong
interpersonal skills and track record of collaborating with diverse
stakeholders Strong communication, writing, and presentation skills
Strong organizational skills with attention to detail Relentless
determination to do whatever it takes to help Atmosphere students
succeed Proactive and creative problem-solver Values input and
feedback Team-player capable of working both collaboratively and
independently Strong recommendations from prior employers and
colleagues Master degree in a related field preferred Bachelor
degree in a related field required NYS certification in field
preferred Prior coaching, coordination, or management experience
Responsibilities Supporting the Chief Academic Officer (CAO), Chief
Learning Officer (CLO), and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO)
through a leadership mindset, Instructional Leaders must
consistently utilize higher-order reasoning and common sense to
promote a pro-Atmosphere and pro-student learning environment.
Instructional Leaders are required to work 50 hours per week and
are not granted flex time. However, ILs do have the added perk of
comp time and can work with their supervisor(s) to create work
schedules that meet their personal and professional needs (with
some weeks or days where the IL takes needed time and then exceeds
the hourly expectation or obligation on another day or week).
Supervision Duties Leading (in collaboration with various other
school leaders) the completion of all math department teacher
evaluations through the school's custom evaluation procedure
Cultivating high-quality instruction by conducting mini, informal,
and formal observations using the AAPCS Teacher Evaluation Rubrics
& Forms At least 1 mini observation per teacher per month
Completion of formal and informal observations each quarter as
prescribed by the Evaluation Process document. Collecting evidence
in the form of video, pictures, data, narratives and other
artifacts to illustrate teacher performance Developing all math
department teachers via regular coaching, which includes: Check-in
meetings and conferences Lesson plan feedback Reviewing Google
Classroom entries Data dives Reviewing of student work Guiding
planning and assessment design Developing an Individual Goal and
Coaching Plan for each teacher Maintaining teacher logs - noting
teacher coaching meetings, as well as progress on lesson plans,
grade book entries, RTI and other professional requirements.
Creating teacher portfolios, SOY, MOY, EOY evaluations for teachers
through the use of narratives, ratings, and artifacts that include
reports, notes, and images Calculating teacher effectiveness
scores, analyzing goal data and determining performance based
bonuses Managing teachers' use of and communication around PTO in a
way that advocates for student learning, while empathetically
supporting the needs of the staff,including, advanced notice of
absences, evidence of emergencies, calendar entries, absentee plans
and accurate documentation in the teacher's log and Employee
Database. Identifying teacher's needs for improvement, document
progress and interventions, and recommend TIPs or further action
Suggesting professional development opportunities for the
mathematics department members that are either presented by
Atmosphere or independently identified Using the above processes to
help improve teachers' ability to collaborate, receive constructive
feedback, and implement said feedback to improve their
instructional or professional practice (build capacity and remain
solutions-oriented within the context of a learning organization)
Curriculum and Instruction Duties Taking proactive ownership,
utilizing strategic vision and detailed planning to develop and
build a strong instructional program. The Math Instructional Leader
must make data-driven decisions and identify resources to support
problem-solving, evaluate programs and implement school initiatives
and short/long term plans. Ensuring co-planning is complete in a
productive and timely basis with sustainable and enriching
co-planning relationships Promoting and monitoring for fidelity to
and utilization of key instructional models and strategies
Facilitating the implementation of instructional cycles Creating or
revising curriculum maps, scope and sequences, and other key
curricular documents in close collaboration with other school
leaders, the department team, and/or other departments as needed
Managing curriculum materials and instructional resources,
including; texts, web-based resources, manipulatives and equipment.
Managing the creation of unit packets by curating quality
materials, sharing exemplar packets and training teachers to
develop their own. Researching and proposing purchases Developing
an implementation plan for use, including training if needed.
Evaluating value and impact of resource to determine future use
Maintaining an inventory of existing items Coordinating approved
purchases with the Operations Leader Checking lesson plans on a
weekly basis for required elements and quality Learning Objective
Rigor Differentiation Questioning Assessment Adherence to the
curriculum scope and sequence Enhancing our student experience in
their content area beyond the classroom Finding resources,events or
programs (ex: math olympics club). Determining if that program is a
good fit for Atmosphere Creating an implementation plan including a
budget and staffing plan Piloting the implementation to
successfully initiate the resource/program/event. Evaluate the
resource/program/event for continued use Data and Assessment Duties
Tracking and monitoring student achievement data in given
department to monitor progress in real-time and adjust as needed
Collaborating with teachers and other departments or ILs in
designing quarterly, common, major assessments, incorporating
authentic and informal assessments into daily lessons, and all/any
other assessment initiatives Analyzing teacher assessment data in
connection with achievement data to produce a full report of
student performance, make proficiency predictions and suggest
programmatic changes Supporting teachers in creating data walls,
using data to drive instruction, developing data-informed student
micro-groups, and implementing any/all other data initiatives
Checking PowerSchool and School Runner for accuracy and updates to
make sure all deadlines are met Producing reports on teacher
performance for review by the Leadership Team Meeting Duties
Leading department team meetings to ensure high-quality,
data-driven instruction is happening every day Facilitating weekly
coaching meetings with teachers to establish and promote high
standards and expectations in curriculum planning and professional
development Participating in bi-weekly check-in meetings with CAO
and CLO to share information about teacher and program feedback
Presenting relevant data and updates to the Leadership team
Teaching Duties Teaching Afterschool Achievement (2 sessions per
week) Facilitating instruction on designated Achievement Days
(Mandatory during April break, and 3 days of your choice during
February Breaks and Saturdays. Comp time is earned for those 3
days.) Maintaining a highly-engaged classroom setting that promotes
good order and a love of learning Highlighting student voices and
promote student-led discovery of meaning Professional Duties
Attending professional development and targeted meetings for the
Leadership Team (8 days) Developing and facilitating professional
development workshops for staff Seeking out internal and external
professional development opportunities that are either presented by
Atmosphere or independently identified Taking part in school-wide
special events or enrichment by serving as an advisor to a student
activity or club, an athletic coach, a chaperone, etc. Actively
contribute to a professional learning community by partaking in
coaching and other activities and tasks focused on promoting
professional learning and growth Other Duties Completing any and
