The Mechanical Design Engineer is a key member of the engineering team, working on complex wafer processing equipment involving ion beam etch, ion beam deposition, chemical and physical vapor deposition technologies. This role involves overall system design, motion and robotics, vacuum vessel design, heat transfer, ion beam source design, incorporation of OEM power supplies and controllers, as well as many other engineering and design areas.Responsibilities:Work on development projects of vacuum process equipment, with the responsibility for all mechanical design aspects and manufacturing of the equipment, subassemblies and componentsProvide mechanical engineering expertise, while focusing on design quality, reliability, effective cost, and ease of manufacturingPerform analytical studies and theoretical calculations, requiring a variety of engineering knowledge, including analysis of vacuum vessels, heat transfer, material structural analysis, static and dynamic, fluids, motion mechanismsDefine mechanical design specifications based on customer requirements and company capabilitiesEnsure that manufacturing processes are compliant with standard design practices and safety codes; ensure appropriate tests are in place in order to produce reliable products in a repeatable mannerPrepare presentations and present design concepts, ideas, and test results to internal and external customersProvide expertise in mechanical engineering while participating in design reviews; support procurement efforts in correlation with overall project deadlinesProvide "hands on" assistance and support to the manufacturing teamDevelop test plans and design of experiments and is directly involved in prototype development and testingCreate and release engineering documentation through the ECO processSupport Program Management with project flow through the PLC Phase gatesQualifications:BS Degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of 5 years of experience or an MS degree with 3 years of experience designing subassemblies or components is required. Experience designing capital equipment and vacuum systems is preferred. Experience with SolidWorks, Inventor, ProE or similar 3D CAD system is required. Finite element analysis experience, both structural and thermal, is required.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Experience with SAP, or similar PLM system, preferredAbility to work effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment as part of a multi-disciplinary team, able to take initiative, own full projects, and/or lead a small project teamGeneral knowledge of electrical and software engineering disciplinesExcellent oral and written communication skills, including specification development; ability to make technical presentations and interface with all levels of management, suppliers, and customersKnowledge of industrial control systems, sensors, automation, robotics, instrumentation, motion control, motor selection, encoders, electronic packaging, SEMI regulatory standards is a plusProject management experience is preferredMust be hands-on with devices, prototyping, and troubleshootingProficient with Microsoft Office suiteAbility to travel up to 10% of the time to customer sites and/or supplier facilities on an as-needed basisVeeco is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
