Brilla Public Charter Schools is a network of elementary and middle schools that currently serve over 1,360 students from the Mott Haven and University Heights area and surrounding neighborhoods in the Bronx.  We plan to grow our network from our five current campuses to eight over the next decade, reaching some 3,200 students in the Bronx. Position Overview:

Success in this position requires a dance teacher who has:

An entrepreneurial spirit to create one of the best FAA programs in the city, from the ground up

A sense of ownership for the vision of the FAA program, and the responsibility for backwards planning the curriculum to culminate in a knock-your-socks-off performance

Skill and motivation to create a program so esteemed and rigorous that performances could be featured at Brilla events, Community Events, and even National Events (think Americas Got Talent caliber)

The dance teacher commits to upholding Brilla College Preps mission, instruction, vision, and Commitment to Excellence.

Our vision for the dance curriculum is one that incorporates at least three different styles of dance.

The teacher will own the vision for the dance program at our school, from planning to execution.

The teacher will report to, and receive coaching from, a grade level lead. 

He/she will demonstrate high expectations for the achievement and conduct of all students and foster a safe, joyful, and nurturing learning environment in which students can thrive as they learn the knowledge and skills associated with dance.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Attend 3 week long summer Professional Development in August before school year to become familiar with systems, routines and expectations (8am-5pm)

Produce a quarterly performance for scholars to demonstrate new skills

Develop a scope and sequence on how the year will unfold

Prepare thorough lesson plans and materials prior to each lesson to maximize instructional time

Establish and communicate measurable lesson objectives and evaluate success in meeting objectives

Differentiate instructional techniques to meet the diverse needs of students

Set and uphold high expectations

Consistently monitor levels of student engagement and understanding, exercising cognitive empathy to consider the learning experience from the students perspective

Regularly assess student academic achievement, character skill building, and habit formation

Administer and analyze informal and formal student assessments, using quantitative and qualitative data to drive and inform instruction

Maintain collaborative and collegial working relationships with other teachers, staff members, parents, and community members

Model and teach the values of Brilla Public Charter Schools

Actively engage in ongoing professional development

Maintain regular communications with parents and guardians to build positive and trusting relationships with students and families

Commit to be available by phone after school hours until 7:00 p.m. each weekday to address any student or family questions or concerns (cell phone provided by the school)

Contribute to positive classroom environment and school culture; manage student behavior in a calm, consistent, proactive, and warm-strict manner

Develop conscientiousness, independence and responsibility among students (e.g. develop system for students to fulfill class roles)

Value and draw upon the experiences and backgrounds of students to enhance students positive sense of self

Use relevant technology to support instruction

Perform other duties as assigned

Dress professionally at all times

Key Qualifications & Competencies:

  • Possess zest, grit, hope, love, social intelligence, gratitude, and a sense of humor
  • Bachelors Degree or higher from an accredited institution
  • Teaching experience in middle school preferred
  • Consistent focus on results and demonstrated student progress
  • Capable of seeing projects through from beginning to end
  • Passion for contributing to a team-oriented, mission-driven school culture
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and desire to contribute to building a school from the ground up
  • Optimistic, motivated, and adaptable
  • Self-aware and understands own strengths and weaknesses; commitment to continuous personal growth, professional development, and mentorship opportunities
  • Desire to be coached and mentored in a co-teaching setting
  • Verbal and written communication skills
  • Spanish language proficiency a plus

Educational Background and Work Experience:

  • Bachelors degree required (Masters degree preferred)
  • Evidence of student achievement in content area
  • Experience working in a school setting
