Job Description:
Regimental Battalion Officers are the direct advisors and mentors
to the cadet officers in their respective battalions. They oversee
the training and provide the necessary support to these cadet
officers, and to all the cadets assigned to their battalion. The
Regimental Battalion Officer models appropriate character and
strong ethics through disciplined behavior and professional
appearance as a representative of SUNY Maritime College.
The job entails the daily shaping and leadership development of the
future leaders of global industries including the Maritime
transportation and key business sectors. As such, this position
requires the individual to maintain the highest standards of
conduct and appearance, as well as actively leading and managing
the development and maturation of the Regimental Cadets. This
position requires the ability to consistently, unemotionally, and
without any deference to a particular individual, apply the
standards of behavior outlined in the Regimental policies and those
of the broader College in a fair and consistent manner. Incumbent
must be comfortable administering demerits, conducting counseling,
and assigning extra duty or other such discipline at events known
as Captain's Mast.
Description of Duties:
Coordinate and effectively implement regulations and programs that
assist in the daily operations at the Battalion-level leadership in
concert with over-arching Regimental missions and objectives.
Assist, direct, advise and mentor the activities of the cadet
officers of the respective battalions
Oversee the conduct and performance of his/her respective
battalions and the cadets assigned, including watch-standing,
discipline
Serve as liaison between the Regiment and academia, professional
development programs, and student services for the cadets assigned
to their battalion.
Conduct/oversee weekly Mast proceedings as directed by the Rules
and Regulations.
Ensure that cadet officers are accountable for the actions and
morale of the cadets in their charge,
Oversee performance of routine administrative functions such as
conduct inspections, draft and edit regulations and policies;
develop training plans and precisely maintain key records such as
demerit counts or outcomes of Captain's Mast
When necessary, work with the Dean of Admissions to recruit
potential students. Attends or ensures Regimental Staff coverage at
Open Houses and other events to make presentations designed to
showcase the College and, in particular, the Regiment
As directed by supervisors and administrative authorities,
participate in the Summer Sea Term training program.
Responsible for supervising various aspects of training and cadet
affairs while on Summer Sea Term, such as breathalyzing for alcohol
use, supervision of liberty and other duties as assigned.
Stands Regimental or ship watch (requires appropriate
qualification) as assigned during Summer Sea Term.
Involved in the training activities associated with Title IX.
Supports the operations of the Regiment and/or other duties as
assigned by the Commandant of the Regiment or the College
President
Develop the leadership and military training programs for the
battalion
Work in alignment with the Dean of Admissions to effectively
recruit potential students (license and non-license programs) for
SUNY Maritime.
Academic responsibility, up to six credits per semester
Requirements:
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree
Prior military experience or valid US Coast Guard license as 3rd
Mate or 3rd Assistant Engineer
Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills
Demonstrated leadership skills
Ability to prioritize and accomplish multiple tasks; demonstrated
organizational skills
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Strong desire to work in a student-oriented environment in higher
education
Microsoft skills, including Word, Power Point and Excel
Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license and
Transportation Worker's Identification Card (TWIC) and passport for
international travel
Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of maritime industry
Previous experience in education, state or large city system
STCW '95 qualification
2-3 years comparable industry or sailing experience

Additional Information:
Classification/Salary Range: The Battalion Officer is a United
University Professions (UUP) calendar year appointment. The
anticipated salary range for the position is $65,000 - $70,000
annually, based on qualifications, with an outstanding benefits

Special Notes: This is a 12-month academic year appointment UUP
position. Fair Labor Standard Acts (FLSA) Exempt position, not
eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and
external search to occur simultaneously.
The position often requires working a non-traditional schedule in
order to accommodate the operational needs of the College and
requires some travel.
The employee is required to furnish (at his or her own expense) and
maintain a full complement of appropriate uniforms in excellent
condition. The typical daily work routine, as well as official
College functions, requires the wear of appropriate uniforms and
organizational clothing. Individual may be designated escort for
dignitaries and must be able to present outstanding professional
appearance, demeanor and knowledge of protocol at all times.
Due the requirements of the rigorous life style at sea and ashore
associated with the Regiment, the individual must meet the campuses
physical and medical requirements, and must be adaptable to a life
at sea which can be associated with certain hazards.
The Regiment of Cadets follows a military organizational structure
and consists of the necessary command and staff cadets to lead and
administer the cadet regiment composed of three battalions. Each
battalion consists of two companies. The regimental organization
for the Summer Sea Term follows a basic merchant ship arrangement
modified for training purposes. It is divided into deck and engine
departments. Each department is divided into three divisions for
watch, maintenance and training purposes. Administrative assistants
and technical specialty Cadet Officers provide training
opportunities and are necessary for supporting the operation of the
training ship.
The Summer Sea Term is a 70 to 75-day training program aboard the
College's training ship that includes 60 days at sea with visits to
European and Mediterranean ports. It is a requirement for the
incumbent to annually participate, unless expressly waived by the
Master of the Training Ship and the Commandant of the Regiment due
to some unusual circumstance.
