Position Overview:
The Transform & Empower youth to Aspire through Mentoring (T.E.A.M)
is a Six-month community base mentoring/aftercare program serving
youth transitioning from citywide Limited Secure Facilities (LSP)
and Non-Secure Facilities (NSP) back into their home communities.
Mentor will be assigned and responsible for a caseload of up to
fifteen youth at any given time. The T.E.A.M Mentor will provide
family, interactive group work journaling and 1:1 Mentoring
Services for adolescents and young adults exiting Limited Secure
Placement facilities in the five boroughs. T.E.A.M Mentors recruit,
engage and support the youth in strengthening their attachment to
community, resources, education, employment, family, and financial
development. The approach mentors utilize is facilitation of an
interactive group work journaling curriculum to assist towards a
youth/young adult identifying and changing thinking, attitudes and
behaviors which impede positive academic and social development.
T.E.A.M Mentors help prevent recidivism of participants in juvenile
justice and foster care systems.
Position Qualifications:
General Equivalency Diploma or High School Diploma. Must have
personal experience with the Juvenile Justice System. Must have
knowledge in navigating the educational, employment, and housing
systems and resources in NYC. Must have basic understanding and
computer literacy skills with Microsoft Office such as Microsoft
Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Must have basic organizational skills,
strong oral communication skills and group facilitation skills.
Must have experience and ability to navigate the public
transportation system. Demonstrate an understanding of the
importance of culture, race and issues facing adolescents of color.
Demonstrate ability to effectively use a multi-cultural approach in
working with special needs youth. Ability to work as a team member
and independently, as well as actively participate in supervision.
Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with
youth, families, and staff, as well as ability to partner with
professionals. Willingness to speak publicly and participate in
trainings Ability to maintain progress notes. Ability to
demonstrate initiative and creativity, particularly with
adolescents.
Salary: $43,500 (Flat Rate)
